The freeze-thaw cycle, not the cold, does the damage
People assume a hard winter is what wrecks a driveway. It is not the cold by itself. Asphalt handles low temperatures fine when it is sound and dry. What actually breaks pavement apart is the repeated cycling across the freezing point, and coastal York gets more of that cycling than towns further inland.
Ocean air moderates temperature swings, which sounds like it should be gentler on pavement, but it means York often sits right at the freeze line for stretches instead of settling into a hard, steady freeze. A driveway can go below freezing overnight and climb back above it by early afternoon, day after day, for weeks. Each one of those crossings is a small mechanical event happening inside any crack that already has water in it.
Here is the physics in plain terms. Water expands by roughly nine percent when it turns to ice. A hairline crack in asphalt is not watertight. Rain, melting snow, and daily condensation work their way into that crack. When temperatures drop below freezing, the water inside expands and pushes outward against the crack walls, widening it by a small amount. When temperatures rise again, the ice melts, the crack does not close back up to its original width, and now there is more room for the next batch of water to get in deeper. Repeat that sequence forty or fifty times over a Maine winter and a hairline crack becomes a crack you can see from your car.
This is why a driveway can look fine in November and look rough by March even without a single hard freeze below zero. It is the number of freeze-thaw cycles, not the coldest single night, that predicts how much damage a driveway takes in a given winter.
What is happening underneath matters more than what you see
Asphalt is a surface layer sitting on a compacted gravel base. That base is what actually carries the weight of your car and holds the surface in shape. Freeze-thaw damage does not stop at the visible crack. Water that gets through the asphalt surface reaches the base material underneath, and gravel bases hold water in the spaces between stones.
When that water freezes, it can cause frost heave, which is a slow upward lifting of the base as ice forms and expands within it. As the ground thaws in spring, the base settles back down, but not always evenly, and not always back to its original compaction. Repeated heaving and settling loosens the base structure over multiple winters. A driveway with a compromised base will show soft spots, slight depressions, and a tendency for new cracks to appear in the same general areas each year, because the support underneath keeps moving.
This is the distinction that matters when you are deciding whether a crack is cosmetic or structural. A crack confined to the surface layer, with a firm, stable feel underfoot and no movement when you drive over it, is a maintenance item. A crack that keeps reopening in the same spot every year, especially if it is near a low point where water collects, usually means the base underneath took damage and is still moving.
Reading the stages of crack damage
Hairline cracking is the earliest visible stage. These are thin surface cracks, often less than an eighth of an inch wide, that show up first at the edges of the driveway or in wheel paths where flex is highest. At this stage the base is almost always still sound. This is the cheapest and most effective point to intervene, because sealing a hairline crack keeps water from ever reaching the base in the first place.
Linear cracking is the next stage, where individual cracks widen and start connecting to each other, sometimes running the width of the driveway. These often follow old expansion joints, utility trenches, or the natural line where two paving passes met. Linear cracks that are still tight and shallow can usually still be routed and filled. Left alone, they become the entry point for the water that eventually causes base damage.
Alligator cracking, sometimes called fatigue cracking, is the stage where a network of interconnected cracks forms a pattern that looks like reptile scales. This pattern means the asphalt has lost structural integrity across an area, almost always because the base underneath has already been compromised by water and repeated freeze-thaw movement. Alligator cracking is not something crack filler fixes. It is a signal that the affected section needs to be cut out and rebuilt from the base up, because sealing the surface over a broken base just traps water in a structure that is already failing.
Potholes are the final stage, where the surface has fully separated from a weakened base and traffic has pushed the loose material out, leaving an open hole. Potholes almost always start as alligator cracking that went unaddressed through at least one winter. By the time you have a pothole, the repair is a patch or a section rebuild, not a surface treatment.
What to fix in fall, and why timing matters
Fall is the season to close every crack you can before the ground freezes. The goal of fall crack work is simple: keep water out of the base before winter starts its cycling. Hairline and linear cracks that are still tight are ideal candidates for hot rubberized crack filler, which is flexible enough to move with the pavement through temperature swings without breaking its seal.
Crack filling needs the pavement dry and the air temperature within a workable range, generally above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, so it needs to happen before the weather turns too cold and wet to work with. Waiting until the first snow to think about crack sealing means missing the window entirely, and that crack then goes into winter open, which is exactly when it will do the most damage.
Sealcoating also belongs in the fall or late summer conversation if the surface is due, since a fresh sealcoat adds a layer of protection against water penetration and against the deicing salt that will be applied to the same surface all winter. Sealcoating needs warmer, more stable weather than crack filling does, so it has an earlier cutoff in the calendar than crack work.
What to fix in spring, and why it is different work
Spring is when you assess what winter actually did. Cracks that widened, new alligator patterns, potholes that opened up over the winter, and any areas where the surface feels soft or spongy underfoot all need a spring look. This is diagnostic season, not just maintenance season, because you are seeing the real result of that winter's freeze-thaw cycling.
Pothole patching is primarily a spring and summer job because it typically uses hot mix asphalt, which needs warmer ground and air temperatures to compact and bond properly than crack filler does. Cold patch material can serve as a temporary fix over the winter if a pothole opens up mid-season, but it is not a permanent repair and should be replaced with a proper hot mix patch once the paving season opens.
Spring is also the right time to deal with any base level damage that showed up as alligator cracking or as an area that heaved and settled unevenly. Because the ground has fully thawed and drained by late spring, this is when a contractor can accurately assess how deep the damage goes and whether a section needs a full cut out and rebuild rather than a surface patch.
A practical seasonal rhythm for York driveways
The most durable approach treats driveway care as a two season rhythm rather than a one time repair. In fall, close every open crack you can reach, and consider sealcoating if the surface is due, so the driveway goes into winter with as little exposed pavement as possible. In spring, walk the driveway once the snow is gone and the ground has dried out, note anything that changed over the winter, and address potholes or base damage while the paving season allows for a proper hot mix repair.
Driveways that get this attention every year tend to show slow, manageable wear. Driveways that get ignored for several winters in a row tend to jump straight from hairline cracking to alligator cracking to potholes within a couple of seasons, because each untreated winter compounds the damage from the one before it. The cost difference between fall crack sealing and a spring base rebuild is not small, and it is driven entirely by how many freeze-thaw cycles that water got to work with before someone closed the crack.
